I have downloaded VirtualBox 5.1.8 in order to play some old games of mine that won't run on my new Windows 10 laptop. I created a Windows XP VM since all my games ran on our old desktop XP. However, one of my games (and of course my favorite) will not run correctly. The game will start and get as far as the menus, but when I click to start gameplay, the game crashes and pops up a window with the error 'init D3D fails'. I made sure 3D acceleration was checked in Settings (unchecked 2D because it made the opening credits wacky). After much googling, I deduced this had to do with DirectX. I installed GA in safe mode which enabled DirectDraw and Direct3D. In the Direct3D test, the first test fails saying, 'Test failed at step 8 (creating 3D device): HRESULT = 0x8007000e (out of memory). I've searched for a solution to this error and seen that some have attributed it to AGP Texture Acceleration being disabled. Some have gotten around it by installing WineD3D. I installed a version of WineD3D but it hasn't enabled AGP.

I figured it may have been an older version, so I tried to download the newest version of Wine, but it is saying it is a BZ2 file which I can't seem to figure out how to access from the VM.
In my hours searching for a solution to this problem, I have seen many other people have struggled with it, but haven't seen many solutions. Also, all threads related to this that I can find (on this forum and others) are at least 4 years old.
Are there any new solutions to this problem? Would the latest version of Wine fix this error?
