Volkswagen engines were first developed in Germany by Ferdinand Porsche during the 1930s. The Volkswagen Beetle would later become the most popular car in the world, partially because Volkswagen's air-cooled engines were reliable and easily swapped with other Volkswagen vehicles, regardless of model. Volkswagen engines included the 1192, 1285, 1548, 1679, 1285 and the1493 cubic-centimeter models. However, Volkswagen rounded the engine sizes up, so a 1548 cubic centimeter engine is called a Volkswagen 1600. Identification of the Volkswagen engine can by accomplished by locating the engine casting number on the engine block.

VW Engine Codes. The engine capacity is given in cubic centimetres (cc). Early engines are usually rounded off – such as the 1192cc engine listed as a 1200 – but modern engines give the exact figure. ‘Layout’ describes the engine design. I = In-line; F = Flat (boxer); V = Vee. The number of cylinders is given. For Classic Volkswagens, the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is particularly important. The chassis number on the car is the only sure-fire way to identify the origin of a VW. Because so many classic VW parts are interchangeable, the vehicles appearance and/or parts are not always telling of the vehicles origin.

Step 1

Locate the engine casting number. According to Bustopia, the engine casting number is located below the generator stand, which is mounted to the top of the engine. The generator stand is in the center between the two valve covers. The number is usually one or two letters, followed by a set of numbers, ' U1000011,' for example.

Step 2

Write down the casting number. Be sure the number is easily read before recording it. This may require cleaning the area with a wire brush and cleaning solvent to properly read the engine number.

Decode the Volkswagen engine number. The letters at the beginning of the engine code are the engine size identifiers, with the following numbers being production numbers. The example, ' U1000011,' decodes as a 1965 1584 cubic-centimeter engine, when referenced to the listing found on Bustopia. Both Bustopia and the Samba's VW engine letters page have VW casting number listings.

Tip

• Volkswagen engines were sometimes bored to a larger size, increasing the displacement of the engine. This may be an issue, because the engine's displacement will no longer match the engine code. In this case, the only true way to determine engine size is to measure the bore and stroke.

We entered the VIN of a few vehicles that were once in the Edmunds long-term test fleet, and the search came up with some interesting information.

The first car VIN was the 2013 Scion FR-S. There was one item that stood out: The VIN decoder shows the manufacturer is Subaru, not Scion (now reabsorbed back into Toyota), but that's not an error. The Scion FR-S (now called the Toyota 86) and its twin, the Subaru BRZ, were the products of a joint venture between Subaru and Toyota. Both are manufactured at Subaru's plant in Japan.

When we did a search for the VIN of another former test vehicle, a 2011 Chevrolet Volt, there was a hidden bit of trivia in the fuel type. It erroneously says that the Volt can run on E85 ethanol in addition to gasoline.

General Motors originally intended to launch the Volt with a flex-fuel variant, but the emissions package was not ready for the car's introduction, according to the automaker. Notice that the 10th character in the VIN is 'C.' The letter represents the 2012 model year, but it could also mean 1982. Because the year is represented by one character (letter or number) and the VIN can only contain 17 characters, the code for a car's year has to be recycled every 30 years. So while one letter can represent more than one year, it should be pretty obvious whether you've got a 1982 or a 2012 — or 2042, for that matter.

Finally, here's a bit of vehicle history on a 2011 Ford Mustang GT. Notice that the manufacturer isn't listed as 'Ford Motor Co.' The AutoAlliance International Inc. was a joint venture between Ford and Mazda that produced the Mustang and the Mazda 6 for a while at a plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.
